GOLDFINGER MAGAZINE 29 MENOTTES D I N H VA N A CLASP TURNED JEWELLERY Drawing inspiration from the world around him, it was looking at the head of a key that Jean Dinh Van had the idea of recreating and intertwining it with another identical head. Simple on the surface but requiring perfectly manipulated proportions for the two elements to fit together, this system formed an ingenious clasp that seemed almost impossible to undo. Brazenly anti-establishment, Jean Dinh Van chose to position this clasp at the centre of his jewellery, whilst traditional jewellers usually endeavoured to hide it. Mounted indiscrimi- nately on a gold chain, a string of pearls or a simple cord, and redesigned in an array of variations, this interlaced motif, renamed Menottes dinh van, soon became a poignant and universal symbol of the unbreakable bond and attachment between two people. Since its creation in 1976, the Menottes dinh van collection has continued to blur the lines between the masculine and feminine, occupy- ing a league of its own as perfect jewellery with no age or gender.
